Jewish Signs: PIDYON HABEN

PIDYON HABEN IS THE NAME OF A CEREMONY SYMBOLIZING A REDEMPTION OF THE FIRSTBORN SON.
In history the firstborn was supposed to be dedicated to God. In the course of time God selected a tribe (Kohanim), which was separated into the Kohanim and Leviim, descendants of Aaron, brother of Moses, to be God’s servants in the temple. Since then Jews are to remember the original law by fulfilling a mitzah for every son to this day. One redeems the child who should have been designated for divine service.
It takes place on the 31st day following birth.
The father pays a symbolic payment of five silver coins to a Kohen.
The ceremony is also a reminder of the last plague in Egypt, where the firstborn sons were slain, whereas the jewish firstborn were spared.
