THE LAWS OF FAMILY PURITY: A MIKVAH

FAMILY PURITY IS A TERM DESCRIBING THE LAWS OF SEXUAL OR PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A HUSBAND AND A WIFE. STARTING WITH THE ONSET OF HER MONTHLY MENSTRUAL PERIOD, TO THE END OF THE SEVEN “CLEAN” DAYS FOLLOWING MENSTRUATION, THE WOMAN IS IN A STATE OF SEPARATION (NIDDAH). DURING THIS TIME THE HUSBAND AND WIFE ARE NOT ALLOWED SEXUAL NOR PHYSICAL CONTACT.

THE SEPARATION ENDS WITH A SPIRITUALLY SIGNIFICANT RITUAL THAT REMOVES THE WOMAN FROM HER STATE OF NIDDAH. THIS RITUAL IS THE IMMERSION IN A RITUAL BODY OF WATER (MIKVAH).
