Jewish Signs: MILA

MILA IS THE WORD FOR CIRCUMCISION.
IT IS A COVENANT FROM GOD;

“This is my covenant which you shall keep… every male among you shall be circumcised… that shall be the sign of the Covenant between Me and you. At the age of eight days every male among you shall be circumcised throughout the generations…” (Genesis 17:10-14)

IT IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS BRIT, WHICH MEANS COVENANT. BRIT MILA THEREFORE STANDS FOR THE COVENANT OF CIRCUMCISION. A SPECIALIST ON THE PROCEDURE, A “MOHEL”, PERFORMS THE CIRCUMCISION. THE PERSON HOLDING THE CHILD IS CALLED, SANDEK, AND IS CONSIDERED AN HONOR.
