LAWS THAT GOVERN THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS

On the first day you shall hold a sacred convocation,
and on the seventh day a sacred convocation;
no work at all shall be done on them,
only what every person is to eat,
that only may be done by you.
(Exodus 12:16)

-relates to Pesach, but is typical of the commandments concerning all of the festivals mentioned in the Torah.

These special days provide opportunities to celebrate God’s role in history and nature, the historical and spiritual events that symbolizes the identification of Israel and Jerusalem. They embody the deepest yearnings and values of the Jewish people.

In general the same laws that applies to Sabbath applies to the holidays;

# At least 2 meals (one for the evening and one in the day) are required to be eaten on a festival. (Whereas on Sabbath 3 meals are required)

# The candles are lighted. The blessing only differs slightly. The word yom tov (festival) is substituted for the word Sabbath. In addition the Sheheheyanu blessing is also said, except on the 7th and 8th day of Pesach.

# The Kiddush is also recited on the festivals.

# The presence of 2 challahs, “Sabbath loaves”, on the table

# Havdalah is said at the conclusion of the festival (but without including the blessing for the light or the blessing for the spices)

Exceptions from the laws governing Sabbath;

# It is permissible to transfer fire and to cook and bake (unless the festival day falls on the Sabbath), provided the food is intended for that day

# It is also permissible to carry certain objects in the public domain

If a festival falls on a Thursday/Friday; one may cook on a festival day only if not all food is intended for the next day. By setting up an eruv tavshilin the Wednesday before, reciting the following blessing, Jewish law ruled it permissible to prepare on the festival day for the next (Sabbath) day;

Baruch ata adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu al mitzvat eruv.

The festivals of Pesach and Succoth have in addition to the ones just mentioned, special observances and rules.

In the Diaspora (land outside of Israel), the sacred days observed being;

-First 2 and last 2 of Pesah
-The 2 days of Shavout
-First 2 of Sukkoth
-The 2 days of Shmnini Atzeret ( the second day is called Simhat Torah)
-The 2 days of Rosh Hashana (signifies the creation of universe)
-Yom Kippur (the day of Atonement)
