ROSH HASHANAH GIVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO CORRECT OUR ERRANT WAYS

Rosh Hashanah - After the Creation of the World was made point of basis for the counting of years, a tradition in ancient antiquity assigned this day to the first of Tishrei.

This holy day also became known as Rosh Hashana, the New Year (translated it means “head of the year”).

The Torah makes no reference to a day to be known as Rosh Hashana, but refers to the first day of Tishrei (the seventh month) as the holy day of the Day of Remembrance (Yom Hazikaron), and as the Day of Sounding the Shofar (Yom Teruah).

In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of rest, a memorial proclaimed with the blast of the horn, a holy convocation. You shall not do any servile work…

(Lev. 23:24-25)

ROSH HASHANAH MARKS THE START OF A TEN-DAY PERIOD OF SPIRITUAL SELF-EXAMINATION AND REPENTANCE, WHICH CULMINATES WITH YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT.

-INTENSIVE PRAYER IS A CENTRAL MOOD OF THIS DAY, WHERE THE MAJOR THEMES ARE GODS SOVEREIGNTY OVER THE WORLD, AND HIS RULER SHIP OVER MANKIND.

The special Biblical precept mostly associated with Rosh Hashana is the blowing of the Shofar (a ram’s horn). It is a religious duty to listen to the shofar sounds on this day.
A total of 100 notes are sounded in three distinct shofar-notes: a long extended sound (tekiah), a broken, plaintive sound (shevarim) and a series of sharp, staccato sounds (teruah). The sound of the shofar has been regarded as a call to penitence, and as a reminder of the shofar sound at Sinai. It is worth noting that if Rosh Hashana falls on the Sabbath, the shofar is not blown on that day.

-At the conclusion of the evening service, one greet each other with:
To a female: L’shana tovah tikatev v’taihatem.
To a male: L’shana tovah tikatevi v’taihatemi.

May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

-One of the most widespread symbolic customs of the dinner meal is the dipping of challah. or a slice of apple into honey and saying;

Yehi ratzon she-t’hadesh alenu shanah tovah um’tukah.

May it be the Lord’s will to renew for us a year that will be good and sweet.

On the afternoon of Rosh Hashana it is customary to got to the waterfront, and symbolically throw away the sins. This ceremony is called tashlich, meaning, “you will cast”, based on the words of the prophet Micah: “And you will cast all of your sins into the depth of the sea”. This is done by throwing pieces of bread into the water and reciting prayers.

-The sacrifice of Isaac also occurred on this day
