THE SHABBATH

THE JEWISH CALENDAR IS PUNCTUATED BY HOLIDAYS, FESTIVALS AND OBSERVANCES SHARED BY THE COMMUNITY. SHABBATH COMES NOT ONCE A YEAR, BUT ONCE A WEEK. SIX DAYS A WEEK THE WORK IS PHYSICAL, AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK, EVERY SEVENTH DAY ONE RECHARGES ONESELF SPIRITUALLY AND TAKES CARE OF ONES SOULS.

The first mention of the "Sabbath" (from the Hebrew verb shabbat , meaning
"to rest from labor"; the day of rest), is in Exodus regarding the gathering of manna:

"And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake today, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning."

“Six days shall you labor and do your work, but the seventh day is a shabbath to the Lord your God, you shall not do any manner of work”, says the Bible in the 4th of the Ten Commandments.

ON THE EVE OF SHABBATH A FESTIVE MEAL IS SERVED. IT USUALLY INCLUDES CHICKEN SOUP, AND A CHICKEN OR BRAISED MEAT. GUESTS WILL OFTEN BE INVITED, AND THE TABLE SET WITH WHITE LINEN, FLOWERS AND THE FINEST CHINA AND CUTLERY.

THE WOMAN AND THE MAN HAVE DIFFERENT DUTIES ON THIS FRIDAY NIGHT

The woman sets the table containing;

# 2 challahs, with challah cover and tray
(2 because God sent food (mana) for 40 years, and he always sent 2, one for Friday and one Saturday)
# salt
# knife
# 2 candlesticks (minimum) – to “remember”, and to “observe”

-She lights the candles, 20 minutes before sunset ushering
the Sabbath in. She recites the candle blessing – Barachah.
The candle is the symbol of the soul; two candles are lit to symbolize the mystical idea that the shabbath grants human beings an “extra soul”. The illumination the candle brings is a symbol of the divine presence. It is the woman of the household who is given the honor to perform this sacred act because the home is not just her castle; it is her temple, in which she serves as high priestess. With this act, the wife and mother is acknowledged as the one who brings warmth and enlightenment to her family.

The man goes to the synagogue

-Recites prayer psalm # 92, before sunset

-At home recites the Kiddush (sanctification) over a cup of wine to acknowledge God as the Creator and the day as
holy.

SHABBAT STARTS 20 MINUTES BEFORE SUNSET , FRIDAY NIGHT, AND ENDS AT NIGHTFALL WHEN THE STARS COME OUT (WHEN ONE CAN COUNT 3 STARS), SATURDAY NIGHT.
