SHAVUOT THE FESTIVAL OF WEEKS OR PENTECOST Beginning with the second night of Passover and every night thereafter, it is a religious duty to count the days for a period of seven full weeks (forty-nine days), leading up to the festival of Shavuot. The fifthtieth day is Shavuot (literally it means weeks – from the seven-week period of counting that precedes it. The holiday is also sometimes referred to as Pentecost, which means fifthtieth
day.) The Torah uses the name Atzeret, which implies a concluding festival –
an indication that the Sages regarded it as tied to and concluding the festival
of Passover. It is also known as Zman matam Torahteinu – “the festival of the
giving of the Torah”. The event was the revelation when God’s will
was revealed to Israel, marking the declaration of the Ten Commandments.
