WHAT PRAYERS ARE RECITED EVERYDAY? (SHEMA, SHEMONEH ESREY, ETC.)

THE TRADITION OF THREE DAILY PRAYERS IS ASCRIBED TO THE PRACTICES OF THE PATRIARCHS;

• THE MORNING PRAYER (SHACHRIT) IS ASCRIBED TO ABRAHAM, AND SHOULD BE SAID UPON ARISING, IMMEDIATELY AFTER WASHING AND DRESSING

• THE AFTERNOON PRAYER (MINHA) IS ASCRIBED TO ISAAC

• THE EVENING PRAYER (MAARIV) IS ASCRIBED TO JACOB.

THE CENTRAL PART OF EVERY WORSHIP SERVICE IS THE AMIDAH, ALSO REFERRED TO AS THE SHMONEH ESRAI. IT CONSTITUTES THE ESSENCE OF THE DAILY MORNING, AFTERNOON, AND EVENING SERVICES, AS WELL AS OF ALL OF THE SABBATH AND FESTIVAL SERVICES.

THE SHEMA (HEAR O ISRAEL) (OR KRIAT SHEMA) IS A BIBLICAL PASSAGE, WHICH IS REQUIRED RECITED TWICE A DAY, MORNING AND EVENING. IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A PRAYER, BUT RATHER A DECLARATION OF FAITH.

OTHER PRAYERS INCLUDE BLESSINGS OF THE TORAH, CALLED ALIYAH – WHEN CALLED UPON READING IT. THE PERSON RECITES TWO BLESSINGS; ONE BEFORE READING, AND ONE IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING.

IN ADDITION TO FORMAL WORSHIP SERVICES BLESSINGS ARE RECITED DAILY FOR MANY THINGS, MOSTLY IN CONNECTION WITH THE DAILY MEALS.
