Jewish Signs: TEFILLIN, TZITZIT, MEZUZAH, MILA (CIRCUMCITION) AND PIDYON HABEN

THE TEFILLIN, TZITZIT, AND MEZUZAH, ARE THE PHYSICAL SIGNS OF THE RITUAL ACTS THAT INTEND TO REMIND US OF THE PRESENCE OF G-D, HIS COMMANDMENTS AND OF OUR DUTIES TO HIM. BUT THEY ARE NOT JUST MEANT TO MERELY REMIND US; THEY ALSO CALL UPON ACTION, DOING AND ACTIVATION OF OUR COVENANT WITH G-D.

THE TALLIT IS A FOUR-CORNERED ROBE WITH THE REQUIRED TZITTZIT (FRINGES) WORN BY MEN ON THEIR SHOULDERS AND TORSO DURING MORNING PRAYER SERVICES.

THE TZITZIT ON THE FOUR CORNERS IS WHAT PROVIDES THE TALLIT ITS RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE,
“YOU SHOULD LOOK AT THEM AND REMEMBER TO DO ALL OF THE 613 COMMANDMENTS”
(365 NEGATIVE AND 248 POSITIVE.)

G-d spoke to Moses;
“Speak to the Jewish people and instruct them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of all garments throughout the ages... thus you shall be reminded to observe all of my commandments and to be holy to your God.”
(Numbers 15:37-41)

TEFILLIN

THE TEFILLIN IS A REMINDER OF HOW G-D FREED THE JEWS FROM THE EGYPTIANS AND SENT THEM ON THE ROAD TO ERETZ YISRAEL, “AND IT SHALL BE A SIGN UPON YOUR ARM, AND AN ORNAMENT BETWEEN YOUR EYE, FOR WITH A STRONG HAND G-D REMOVED US FROM EGYPT”,(EXODUS 13:6-22)

THE TEFILLIN CONSISTS OF TWO SMALL BLACK BOXES, CONTAINING SMALL SCROLLS OF PARCHMENT UPON WHICH ARE WRITTEN FOUR BIBLICAL PASSAGES:

Exodus: “Consecrate every first born to me…”
Exodus: “When the lord will bring you into the land…”
Deut.: “Hear o’ Israel the Lord is our God the Lord is One…”
Deut.: “If you will diligently obey my commands…”

The Tefillin are put on after the Tallit. The arm Tefillin box is set on the bicep skin close to the heart and the Retzuot (leather straps), wound around the arm seven times and then wrapped around the palm of your hand and the middle finger, to form G-d’s name “Shadai”.

The head Tefillin is placed above the forehead and between the eyes where the bottom of the box should not be lower than the hairline.

The knot of the head strap should be centered behind the head at the base of the skull, the straps brought forward across the chest hanging loosely.
