SUCCOTH, MEANING TABERNACLES, BOOTS OR TEMPORARY HUTS – SUCCOT REFERS TO THE TEMPORARY DWELLINGS USED BY THE JEWS AS THEY WANDERED THE DESERT FOR 40 YEARS FOLLOWING THE EXODUS FROM EGYPT.

-The underlying spiritual motif of remembering and reenacting the dwelling in the succah, emphasizes the notion of trust in Gods divine protection. The date of the remembrance (which could have been at any time of the year, as it was not tied to a specific historical event), has additional significance in that it coincides with the final harvest of the year and its spirit and gratefulness.
(The festival is also called hag ha-Asif, “the festival of the ingathering “. It is also referred to as zman simhatainu, “the season of our rejoicing “)

-SUCCOT IS CELEBRATED ON THE 15TH DAY OF TISHREI, AND FOR 7 DAYS ALL MEALS ARE EATEN IN THE SUCCAH. IT IS HIGHLIGHTED BY MUCH MUSIC, SINGING AND DANCING. THE FIRST AND EIGHT DAY IS A DAY OF REST (A SHABBATON)

-The construction of the succah follow distinct rules;
The succah must have at least 3 walls of any material, firmly fixed. It could be small or large.
The temporary quality is in the roof; branches must be loose and not tied in bundles, and could provide more shade than sun – although some air space is required so one can see stars at night.

-THE LAST DAY OF SUCCOT, SIMCHAT TORAH, IS THE DAY OF REJOICING WITH THE LAW. CUSTOM HAS IT THAT THE FIVE BOOKS OF MOSES ARE READ OVER THE COURSE OF 12 MONTHS, AND ARE BEING COMPLETED (AND STARTED AGAIN) ON THIS DAY. THIS IS SYMBOLIZED BY DANCING WITH THE TORAH IN CIRCLES AROUND THE SYNAGOGUE.
